The Armadillo

Pocket Dinosaurs, Hoover Hogs, and Possums on the Half-Shell, I am sometimes called with my protective coat of armor made of bony plates and keratin. Two and a half feet long, I weigh about 15 pounds. I am the nine-banded armadillo. We are the only of the 21 species located in the United States and are a member of the Xenarthra order, which also includes sloths and anteaters.

It’s probably good that my hearing isn’t great, so I don’t have to hear the disgruntled owner of the house complaining about my burrows where I have been camping. My long nose, though, is quite effective and is great for sniffing out the insects, grubs, and bugs for my next meal. I do, however, do lots of good things for the land around us. I help improve underground water drainage; My movements help to mix nutrients into the soil. I help with insect control. I too am an important part of the ecosystem, and your Southern world.

I do not hibernate, and in summer, I breed, and birth 4 identical twins! That is why we are sometimes also referred to as the “Outlaw Quadrupled”.

You don’t want me in the pool with you; I have aquatic superpowers could win some contests as I can hold my breath up to six minutes straight. I’d also get an award in a jumping contest, and I can leap up to 5 feet and run up to 30 miles per hour!

I am shy and reclusive, so don’t worry about me. I’ll stay clear and help your grass stay healthy.
